In a thought-provoking exhibition titled "Fragmented Stories," San Diego artists Eden DeLaVara and Marcela Alarcón López delve into the complex themes of identity, borders, and America's 250th anniversary. Their artistic collaboration, displayed at Gallery 201 in Arts District Liberty Station, offers a unique perspective on the intersection of personal narratives and the broader socio-political landscape.

DeLaVara, too, grapples with the complexities of identity. As a woman of mixed heritage, with a Mexican father and a Black mother, she reflects on the voids and veils in her family history, which hinder her access to her personal past. Despite these challenges, she finds hope and pride in the rich creative legacy of America, especially within the Black community.
The Emerging Artist Residency, according to Quevedo, creates a safe space for artists from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow together. It expands the geographical reach of the arts district, bringing together artists from San Diego and Tijuana, and offering opportunities to a wider artistic community.
Despite the complexities and frustrations surrounding America's 250th anniversary, DeLaVara believes that artistic collaboration is a powerful tool for building bridges and fostering understanding.
